Childhood
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809. Poe had two siblings, and older brother William and a younger sister Rosalie. Before Poe was three years of age, his parents, both traveling actors, had passed away. Edgar Allan Poe was then taken to live with John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant, while his siblings went to live with different families. Despite his guardian's desires of Poe to become a gentleman or businessman, at a young age Poe was interested in writing poetry. By the age of 13, a young Edgar Allan Poe had enough poetry to publish a book, but he didn't with advise from his headmaster.
Later Years
In 1826, Poe left for the University of Virginia with only one third of the money he needed. To pay for college, he resorted to gambling. He built a huge debt, and by the end of his first semester, Edgar Allan Poe was burning his furniture to keep warm.
Through adversity, Poe published his first book when he was only eighteen years of age. He also joined the military and was accepted to West Point. Poe continued to write throughout college and won a contest sponsored by the Saturday Visitor. Poe wrote short stories filled with terror and suspense. Many say that his life experiences shaped his writing to what it is. Today, he is known as the master of terror. Many horror movies and stories have been inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's writing.
