Masque of the Red Death is the story of Prince Prospero's attempt to save his friends, as well as himself, from the Red Death. As the plague was bringing terror to the world, Prospero built a castle far away to keep everyone he loved healthy. Hopeful to keep people alive, he locks the gate of the castle to keep unhealthy people away. He left everyone else hopeless, either soon to be infected or soon to die. After months of waiting out the Red Death, Prince Prospero throws a party to celebrate.
Prosepero decorated each room in a different color.Going east to west, the rooms are arranged by color: blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and finally black. All of the rooms were decorated in the same colors. The windows were also the same color as the room, except in the black room. The windows in that room were red. The black room also had an ebony clock. On every hour when the clock rang, people would shudder and stop what they were doing. They were terrified by the clock and vowed not to be as scared the next time it rang.
As the party goes on, a new guest arrives. Nobody is aware of who it is, but everyone is horrified by them. The mystery guest wanders through the castle and nobody stops him. He travels from east to west, from the blue room to the black. Prospero, trying to see who invaded him party, follows the unknown person. Finally in the black room, Prospero catches up to him. He tries to reveal the person but dies quickly. When everyone else at the party also dies, the giant ebony clock stops ringing. The Red Death had invaded the castle.
